Space is not always a territory, but almost always a place, and this often contains or expels the individual. "Sin Nombre" (Without a Name) is a work that questions the notion of a dehumanized void, one that denies presence. A space stripped of the symbolic expressions of identity, relationships, and history. The themes of migration, unwanted/unwanted mobility, and power relations and vulnerability related to the displacement of individuals across the planet are addressed. Twelve passport photographs, enlarged to a 1:10 scale, are observed, altered with correction fluid (liquid paper) with the intention of erasing the image, the face that identifies the individual. The act of erasing is a metaphor for an emptying action, one that transforms an individual into no one or nothing, stripping them of their identity and memory. This action vanishes in the face of its own impossibility, because the correction fluid peels away from the photographic paper, revealing the image that was previously erased. This work speaks of inhabiting nothingness from one's own identity, of feeling stripped bare in the face of adversity and impossibilities when living in a foreign territory.
