White, plain and uniform background.

Plain, uniform white background is a video installation that stems from the encounter between the two artists during their time in Spain as immigrants. In the videos, Luciana Damiani and Sol Prado read a dialogue from emails they exchanged about their state of transition while both emigrated from Spain to Latin America between October 2015 and May 2016. During this exchange, disagreements arise regarding how to approach the piece and differing perspectives on self-identifying as immigrants. This project is an attempt to sustain a collaborative process that coexists with paradox and the intuition of absence, immersed in the constant shifting of context. From a performative standpoint, the contradictory act of giving biographical voice to the passport photo subjectivizes the body represented in the document, complicating the concepts of identity and territory, politicizing its privileges and disadvantages in relation to other subjects, and the pragmatic impossibilities it faces in developing sustainably in a foreign country.

In this act of “taking the floor,” there is a listening to one's own voice, and, at the same time, an authorial listening to the voice of others, where the artist becomes both the one who affects and is affected by discourse. This project finds its common ground in the challenge of continuing to speak and create together, conceiving of difference as the foundation of some latent identity, in constant transformation, never complete or transparent.
